Tour itinerary for 10 days Southern Gobi and Central Mongolia
“ Adventure in Southern Gobi desert and Central Mongolia”
DAY 1. BAGA GAZRIIN CHULUU AND LAND OF ROCKS
We will start of the trip from Baga gazriin chuluu is a series of granite rock formations located in 60km north-west of Middle-Gobi province, a local administration unit. The place is a home to many wild animals like deers, gazelles, antelopes, ibex, and wolves. The ruins of a small monastery is on the south east part of this rugged area. Explore the granite rock zone. Overnight stay in a Ger with the nomad family.
DAY 2. YOL VALLEY AND THREE BEAUTIES OF GOBI
Yol , named after a vulture , is a deep and narrow gorge in the sub range of the famous mountain “The three beauties of Gobi”. Short trekking through the gorge. The valley is beautiful with impressive canyons green land and little pond. Wild and rare animals such as ibex, wild sheep, fox , antelopes, snow leopards are seen sometimes. Trekking through the gorge Horse-riding is optional as well. Overnight in a Ger camp nearby the gorge.
DAY 3. KHONGOR SAND DUNES / CAMEL RIDING
Drive to the sand dunes of Khongor. Camel riding along the dunes. The two-humped camels are very comfortable to ride, as they walk slowly and gently and we will be well supported by the humps, sitting comfortably between them. Our camel man will take us to the sand-dunes. Visit to Nomads Family. Interaction with local nomads. After dinner , hiking to the dunes to see the sunset and the panoramic view from the top- endless vistas across a sea of daffodil-colored sand. The dunes extend for 185 kilometers and include dunes that can reach 240 meters in height. Overnight stay in a Ger camp.
DAY4. FLAMING CLIFFS AND BAYANZAG
One of the famous places is Bayanzag, Ancient Sea bed which excited 60-70 million years ago where a lot of Palentological findings have been discovered. The place is known as Flaming Cliffs so named by Roy Andrew Chapman American explorer, who had visited Mongolia in 1920. During the 2 years he searched through the Mongolian Gobi Desert and he found Dinosaur fossils from Bayanzag, Nemekht Mountain. He brought his palentological findings on 70 camels. Chapman presented Mongolia one large skeleton on show in the Ulaanbaatar Natural History Museum. He discoverd to the science, about 10 different kinds of dinosaurs and eight of them were found from Mongolia. “The Flaming Cliffs and Bayan Zag – Saxaul forest is situated around 85 km from the Gobi Gurvan Saikhan national park. The barren cliffs look strikingly as if they are aflame during sunset. Not so far from the Flaming Cliffs, there is a forest of saxaul trees –Gobi trees with extremely deep roots. Overnight stay at tourist camp.
DAY 5. ONGI MONASTRY
Early morning drive to Ongi monastery. Discover the ruins of Ongi monastery and its site. There is a ger museum which contains items found in the site of monastery that was actively operating until 1939. Nature in this area is beautiful with rocky mountains, Ongi river and trees. It is also a good spot for bird watching. . Hiking to the rocky mountains is optional. Overnight stay in a true nomad family.
DAY 6. ORKHON VALLEY AND ULAAN TSUTGALAN
We will visit to Uurt gorge, Orkhon river, and the Red waterfall in Orkhon valley.
The red waterfall is situated in historically significant Orkhon valley, whose river flows an incredible 1120 km to the north before it joins the Selenge river. Also called Ulaantsutgalan, the waterfall was formed by unique combination of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes about 20000 years ago. Learn about their unique lifestyle and culture . There is an opportunity to make a horse trip , fishing and hiking. Overnight stay in a Ger nearby the waterfall.
DAY.7 TSENKHER HOT SPRING AND HOT SPA
After breakfast drive to Tsenkher hot spring. It is one of the biggest Mongolia’s hot springs has a temperature of 86 degree with flow rate and high alkalinity and relatively high amounts of fluoride. The hot spring is especially good for skin allergy. We will relax in Hot spa for the whole day. It is a good treatment after a long driving trip. Overnight stay at tourist camp.
DAY.8 TERKHIIN TSAGAAN LAKE AND KHORGO VALCANO
Today we will drive to Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake. Located in Tariat soum, Arkhangai province. About origin of fresh watered Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake, flowing of north and south Terkh Rivers locked by lava flow from a volcanic eruption. The length of lake is 16 km; width is 6 km, 20m deep, 2060 m above sea level and occupied 61 sq.km. The biggest river which is one of the 10 rivers, flow into lake is Terkh river. Also only one river flows from the lake is Suman River. Suman means “Arrow” because this river flows through the lake like an arrow. There is a small island at the middle of the lake, birds make their nest and lay eggs. About Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake, there is interesting story.
Khorgiin Togoo volcano, located on the bank of Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake, 180 km from center of Arkhangai province. The volcano erupted to encompass huge of sq.km area 8 thousand years ago. Around the volcano there many cauldron shaped places to hide so Khorgiin togoo name is connected to these places. Overnight stay at tourist camp.
DAY 9. KHARKHORIN AND ANCIENT CAPITAL OF MONGOLIA
Today we will drive to Kharkhorin ancient capital of Mongolia. The Kharakhorin was built in 1235 by Ogodei Khaan, who was a successor of Chingis Khaan. The foundations of Kharkhorin’s buildings are all underground and Erdene-Zuu Monastery was built near the ruins of the ancient capital in 1585. We will visit the monastery and other places around. Overnight stay in a Ger camp.
